• Check to see the output and return registers are open and free from obstacles like furniture.
• Make sure the emergency switch is in the “on” position.
• Check to see if any circuit breakers are off or have tripped.
• Make sure the doors to the filter or other parts of the heating system are fully closed.
• Water heating systems do not have or need filters.
• Make sure your thermostat is set to the heating mode in the winter and cooling mode in the summer.
• Check the batteries in your thermostat for corrosion in the battery compartment.
• Soot is a sign of serious problems. You should schedule a service call.

NOTE: Be patient during the summer months when it is very hot outside. You may be encountering a practical limit of cooling to about 20 degrees below the outside air temperature. Remember, if it is 95 degrees outside, the house may only be able to be cooled to 75 degrees. This may be a limitation of the air conditioning system and not necessarily a problem.

Set your thermostat above room temperature and to “heat.”

If you have a furnace (forced air):

• Check the air filter and clean or replace if necessary.
• Make sure the blower door panel is properly closed.
• Make sure the furnace power switch is turned on.

If you have a boiler (baseboard/hot water/steam):

• Remove the covers from baseboard heaters and vacuum dust and debris.
• Check the gauge to make sure the water is at the proper level.
• The final step is to set your thermostat above room temperature and to “heat.”

• Make sure the caulking around your windows and doors is intact. A well-insulated home keeps the cooled air out and the heated air in.
• Use a programmable or smart thermostat to regulate the temperature of your home when you are away.
• Replace or clean your filters on a regular basis. A fresh filter helps keep the coil and heat exchanger clean, which increases energy efficiency, helping minimize the risk of breakdowns and helping extend the life of your heating and cooling system.
• In the cooler months, open your drapes and blinds on sunny days. Passive heat from sun, through a thermal window can make a room more comfortable.

Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air. Improper humidity levels can make your home uncomfortable to live in and may cause damage to both the inside and outside of your home. The right humidity levels will help your home feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Turning on your forced hot air heating system in the winter removes even more moisture from the air, which can make your home dry and uncomfortable. One way to alleviate this problem is to install a whole-house humidifier, which works in unison with your HVAC system to disperse moisture throughout your home.
